What It’s Really Like to Work Behind the Scenes of BC’s Development Process

Ever wonder who determines how close a building can get to a creek, or why a construction project stops to check for bird nests? That’s the work of an Environmental Consultant, the behind-the-scenes professional ensuring that development in British Columbia happens responsibly and legally.

At ENKON Environmental Ltd., our consultants balance muddy boots, GPS units, wildlife surveys, and regulation deadlines daily. Here’s a glimpse into what a typical day looks like from fieldwork to final permit submission.

6:30 AM – Early Start & Field Prep

Our day often begins before sunrise. After checking weather and reviewing site plans, we grab gear, like data sheets, maps, tablets, and safety PPE, and head out to the site.

8:00 AM – Wildlife & Habitat Surveys

In the field, we might:

  • Conduct riparian assessments

  • Look for signs of species at risk (e.g., Great Blue Herons, Red-legged Frogs)

  • Survey for active bird nests during breeding season

  • Flag Streamside Protection and Enhancement Areas (SPEAs)

With GPS, data apps, and a trained eye, we collect everything needed for the report—and sometimes spot deer, eagles, or even a salamander along the way.

11:00 AM – Erosion & Sediment Control (ESC) Inspections

Next stop: an active construction site. We walk the perimeter, check silt fencing, inspect inlet protection, and document potential ESC failures, especially after rain events.

We often meet with site supervisors or contractors to review findings and suggest improvements that prevent sediment runoff or permit violations.

1:00 PM – Back to the Office (or Truck) for Reporting

After fieldwork, it’s time to turn observations into actionable reports. That might include:

  • A RAPR report for submission to the province

  • An ESC report for the City of Surrey

  • A wildlife mitigation plan to support a development permit

Every detail matters, from soil stability to species ID photos. We translate technical data into plain language for regulators and clients.

4:30 PM – Client Coordination & Regulator Follow-Up

Before logging off, we’ll respond to questions from developers, planners, and city staff.

We might:

  • Upload reports to the RAPR online submission portal

  • Prepare documentation for a Water Sustainability Act notification

  • Schedule a follow-up ESC inspection after a forecasted rainstorm

Sometimes, we even start preparing for next week’s habitat restoration plan or a First Nations engagement meeting.

Why Environmental Consultants Matter

Our work ensures that development can proceed without harming BC’s natural ecosystems. We protect:

  • Fish-bearing streams

  • Nesting birds and amphibians

  • Sensitive riparian vegetation

  • And your project timeline and permit approval

Environmental consulting isn’t just technical—it’s about stewardship, strategy, and helping people do things the right way.
